Areas of Concentration

Connie’s two areas of emphasis are Health Care and Independent Schools.

HEALTH CARE

MEDICAL STAFF & PATIENT CARE ISSUES

Connie’s healthcare law practice focuses on medical staff legal issues, disciplinary proceedings, reporting of professionals to state and federal regulators, investigations, informed consent issues, EMTALA issues and other patient care and regulatory issues. She also represents medical professionals before state licensing boards.  Connie gained extensive experience as an Assistant Attorney General for the State of Maryland, when she served as the prosecutor for the state physician licensing board (now the Maryland Board of Physicians).  Her three-decades plus practice in the Health Care Group at Venable LLP focused primarily on medical staff issues for hospitals and health systems, including counseling advice on medical staff bylaws, rules and regulations and policies, confidentiality of peer review documents, investigations and creative strategies to avoid time-consuming and expensive due process hearings.

REGULATORY ISSUES

Connie has advised on regulatory compliance challenges faced by hospitals, physicians and physician group practices, medical staffs and health systems.  When facing an investigation by a government agency like Medicare/Medicaid,  HHS, Joint Commission or accreditation or licensing authorities, she strategizes with the client to address issues head-on and resolve them as efficiently as possible.
